We had mixed results and so much depends on the 'tutor'. Based on the fact that most of their tutors seem to be teachers from the school system looking for extra $$, that's what you get. A few years ago, the price for one month of 8 1hr sessions was around $300 and 'sometimes' you got the one-on-one session but mostly, the tutor sat at a table working with 2-3 kids at one time. Our kid had math problems in 8th grade and I called his math teacher from 5th grade and got tutoring that way. We knew her and her teaching skills and, as I remember, we even hired her for 6 wks during the summer for continued math help.
What about the Jr. Natl Honor Society? At my kid's MS, they tutored (for free!) during most mornings of the week. Maybe 'peer' tutoring would be helpful(?) It's part of their 'volunteerism' requirement to be a member and...the same goes for the regular Natl Honor Society in HS...they tutor both before and after school. Peer-to-peer might be helpful?
But, yeah, BTDT with all different kinds of tutoring programs. I just wasn't a raving fan of Sylvan and the Sylvan Advantage (LOL).
