Trey is 8, second grade, and reading at lower scale of grade level.
I will definitely try to back off the corrections either until another time or maybe just approach as a lesson later then have him reread. Now to get hubby to back off. :P In some ways, he's more Nazi-ish than I am; in others, I'm more Nazi-ish. This is coming from a man that also hates to read and avoids it as much as he can. Gee, is it any wonder??? ;( I, on the other hand, LOOOOOOVE to read, and read at every opportunity that I can. Trey LOVES to listen to story, just doesn't like to read them. After I've read the stories a few times, then sometimes he'll try to read it like I do. He LOVES listening to the Chronicles of Narnia series, but right now the books are a bit too difficult for him to tackle as a reader. I see since the movie came out that they've got the second book broken down for young readers, but at this time I can't spend money on them. I think he'll do much better with those. I agree that he likes series books well. We've been reading stories from the Legos series of Knights Kingdom. He struggles with them, but he is interested enough to try to get through them. LOL, he likes to get creative with those ZZZZAAP!!! and POW!! sound effects! ;) Now if they'd only have Bible Man in books!! He LOVES that show!! ; D
I spoke with his teacher this morning, and again, we've just confirmed that we are seeing some of the same patterns, but are not quite sure how to resolve them. The next time they have testing, she will try to let him get with someone outside the classroom and let him read aloud instead of trying to read to himself. We'll see if it's a case of auditory learning or if it's a genuine reading problem or perhaps a focus problem. The only additional aspect of his trouble is staying focused and on task and needs to be redirected. This is throughout class, not just reading. She is able to get his attention by saying if the work isn't done when it needs to be done, it WILL be done during recess. :)
I may proceed with some kind of testing for reading or focus problems. I'm also going to see what we can do about getting vitamins back in the house. Hubby doesn't see the need for them, but I think we are seeing otherwise! :O I think I'm also going to pursue some kind of dietary modifications, such as no red dye or no lunch meats containing nitrites/nitrates and see what happens. I think he might be more sensitive to those than other children may be.
