Another thing to consider is that nonChristians (particularly) may not be too concerned about WHO is doing the charity/mission work, but that someone is. I'm a Christian who thinks nothing of giving to a nonChristian organization (talking about organizations whose faith base is other than Christian) for work that simply needs to be done.
I hope OP doesn't feel guilty about whatever decision she makes, whether or not to contribute to the missionary trip. You can only do what you can do, and she should not be made to feel guilty about it. If her friend can't accept that, then I'm thinking she may need to rethink her motivation for being a missionary.
Shawn, I think that's a great idea about setting up a general fund (if indeed donations are necessary for making these travel plans) for use by the missionary team. I think that's how our church is set up. There is a general collection of funds, then my church divides the money and delivers a lump sum to the missionary church to use as necessary.
