Things we do to save money sm

Posted by Desertrose on June 27, 2009 at 23:43:22:

We love to eat out and go to movies. Now, on date night instead we rent DVDs from the local Redbox for $1 and we make snacks we like. Also, on date night instead of buying a pizza out, we'll buy a frozen pizza and some ice cream. You can do that for $10 whereas ordering out you are going to spend $20 or more.

Also, I've started buying board games to play...this is something fun to do and we can play them over and over each week, have fun, and save on spending money going out for recreation.

Clothes- I am plus-sized and it's VERY hard to find second hand clothes in thrift stores. However, when I do find something that fits, even if out of season, I buy it.

Thrift Stores- when I need something- a vacuum cleaner, household item, I check used appliance stores first, Craigslist, and Thrift stores in my area before buying new.

Pets- I've got em all on dry food- yes, the healthy type- and I buy the BIG bags which come out much cheaper than the smaller bags.

Lastly, we've not been able to afford this idea yet, but we are working toward it:

1. It's a good idea to try to save 3 months of income aside for an emergency.

2. It's not a bad idea to store up 2-3 months of food in big plastic containers. It will help during a job loss, bad storm, economic hard times. Ideas of things to store w/ long shelf life:

-Dried beans
-Canned ham to cut in beans
-Bacon bits to go in beans
-Canned potatoes, carrots, tomatoes to go, guess where? Yep in the beans : )
-Canned: soups, chef boyardee, chili, beef stew, tuna fish, fruit, and veggies
-Pasta, sauces, dried parmesan cheese
-drink mix
-tea bags, sugar
-Self-rising flour to make bread
-Corn bread
-Canned milk
-cake mix and frosting
-oil
-boxes of hot chocolate
-Juice in cans or jars
-popcorn, hard candy
-Saltine crackers (good for usually 1 to 2 years)
-Personal care items: shampoo, etc
-Household items: detergent, cleaning supplies
-Extra pet food, cat litter
-Oatmeal, cream of wheat, grits
-Honey
-Spices: Salt, pepper, garlic powder and salt, stuff to spice up your soups, butter buds...
-Sugar
-Ramen a few cases
-Instant Rice, regular rice
-Sardines, other canned fish
-small jar mayonnaise, spicy mustard
