I read this book back in high school, and I want to find it again. It is the story of a poor but brilliant and beautiful high school student who is madly in love with a boy named Gary. They are determined to be married after high school, and they are saving themselves for marriage. An arrogant rich boy named Neal and his cohorts, one of whom is called Moose, are annoyed by her refusal to become involved with them, and one day while walking along the road, Neal, Moose, and another boy pick her up and take her off to rape her. Her best friend is present in some regard, but later denies that the incident occurs as a way to obtain the gratitude of Moose, who she has had a terrible crush on for years. In return, he marries her after high school. Meanwhile, the main character is accused of seducing the three boys and she is humiliated in the small town where she lives. Her boyfriend breaks up with her and then hangs himself. She later discovers that she is pregnant as a result of the rape, and she runs away. Years later, she and her adolescent son emerge once again, under a different name, and this is where things get fuzzy. I know that the third boy who participated in the rape was gay and later died of AIDS, and that Moose was diagnosed with some form of cancer (I think)and his wife, the former best friend of the victim, tries to convince her to allow her son to be tested as a possible donor. Neal also develops an interest in the boy, determined to find out if it is his son. Meanwhile, there is a budding romance between the main character and a man doing some type of business in the town. He eventually gains her trust and they become involved, and once she has her revenge on her attackers, she and her new love live happily ever after.
