I cannot remember the name of the book or the author the details I remember are somewhat blurred. It is a romance novel based in the somewhere between the 1600 and 1800. The majority of it takes place in the south but it starts out in the Caribbean. There are two cousins who look so much alike they could be twins. One is rich and her father owns a plantation on a Caribbean island the other I believe may be orphaned and went to live with her uncle after the death of her mother. The rich one is engaged to be married to a plantation owner in the south and is set to travel to do so. She however elopes with he lover the night before she is scheduled to travel and leaves her cousin to explain her disappearance. The cousin sets sail with in her place unsure of how she will explain her cousin's disappearance there is some sort of tragedy ant see which results in a case of mistaken identity due possibly to memory loss. The cousin and the jilted fiancé get married and have a son the child has a birth mark that skips a generation. The runaway cousin shows up months later because her life did not turn out as she expected and kidnaps the child and make an attempt to kill the mother and take her place in the life which should have been hers. The name of the characters may be Dianne Celeste and Christopher. Any help in finding this book would be great.
