MY PROFILE

Posted by Tony Talmam on July 18, 2008 at 19:20:20:

I joined the Royal Sussex regiment army on 3rd September 1961. Took the oath along with the Queens shilling in Brighton. (Which sadly I spent at Brighton Station on a cup of tea and a bun) Just 18 year after the end of the 2nd world war. In training, my Pl Sgt was Tony Prudence. Whom I believe becomes RSM of the 2nd Battalion the Queens Regt.

I joined the battalion at Ross Barracks Folkestone for conation training. HQ coy and C coy were there with A coy at Crowbrough in Sussex. C coy consisted of national Service soldiers who were posted to Germany. Minden I think. I was then posted to A coy in Crowbrough.

This was an experience in its self. There appeared at the time a complete lack of disciple within the whole camp. Nothing appeared to be working to order. Every day we would parade and go on a 5-mile march, every day believe me. On return to barracks nothing after happened. One was lucky to find a meal in the cook house. It was a very odd time. At one time, we were on stand buy for somewhere not sure where but have a look on the history channel something must have been going on somewhere. It had to be as I had to make a will.

We then marched from Crowbrough to Lydd which too 5 days. Lewes, Eastbourne, Hastings, Rye then Lydd and from there take to St Martins Plane Camp. We then had to move out of the hutted accommodation to allow the TA to move in. We…the regular soldiers had to live under canvas. Later we then moved to Napier Barracks.

By this time, I had reached the dizzy heights of an L/cpl. I was in Sp pl. An-Tks. Prompted to Cpl, sent on an Atks course, and got a B grade. On return to the Battalion, I was on the rear party as the regt was in Cyprus. On the rear, party was also a Cpl Harris. One guard duty as guard command a prisoner escaped from the nick and for this, I was reduced to a L/cpl. The following weekend Harry Harris was Gd Comd and he asked me to stand in for him. I said no as I was now a L/cpl. Have you still two stripes on your jacket he asked? ‘Yes I said.’ Then what is the problem. I did Harry Harris Gd Commander as a L’cpl as I still had two stripes on my BD and got away with it. How I will never know but we did.
