I was still in the TA (4/5 Royal Sussex)then. That weekend we were on an execise north of the downs. It started snowing and the platoon commander got in a bit panic, called off the execise, we retired to a pub (The Fox and Hounds in West Chilton) they sent for our one ton vechicle from Chi, normally it would have taken 30 minutes to reach us, because of the snow it took a couple of hours. We all got back to the Drill Hall, a bit worse for wear, only to find out that we were the last vehicle to cross the Downs for about a week because of the heavy snow drifts. Often reflect just how close we come to being snowed into a pub for a week (every soldiers dream) and curse that driver who forced his way through the drifts to rescure us. It was Dennis Kaye, some of your might remember him, he joined us with the Ever Readies in Aden a year or so later. "Those were the days and now it pays, in the Home Counties Brigade"
